Historic Greenough Hamlet
Located 30 kilometres South of Geraldton, the historic Greenough Hamlet was first settled
by pioneers who realised the potential of the areas rich, fertile soil. An area formed by
ancient glacier flows and known as "The Greenough Flats" it houses 11 charmingly
restored stone buildings, all of historical significance and preserved as a national heritage
site. Open daily from 9am til 5pm, the Hamlet is a short driving distance from Drummond Cove
Holiday Park.
Around the Hamlet area you will also find a great many of the famous "Greenough Leaning
Trees". This particular species - Eucalyptus Camaldulensis has learnt to adapt in the
strong windy conditions of this area by growing almost horizontal to the ground.
Greenough Hamlet also makes an ideal mid-morning stopover point on your journey South to
explore Dongara as well as the farming and wildflower regions
of the surrounding areas.
Water Playground
One of the worlds best windsurfing
regions, Geraldton also has many top quality surfing and sailing areas, all easily accessible.
Some of the reef breaks offshore are good enough to rival any in the country and are host
to some large surfing carnivals annually.
35km's North of Geraldton, Coronation Beach is renowned as being
one of the world's best wave jumping locations. Even if you don't windsurf yourself, it's
worth the trip to watch the awesome wave jumping action. Drummond Cove Holiday Park is situated
a little under half way between Geraldton and Coronation beach, an ideal base camp if you
are interested in seeing some of the worlds best wave jumpers in action.
As well as wind-powered sports the waters off the Midwest coast also boast some of the best
diving in Western Australia. If the length of your stay permits, it is worth while visiting
the Abrolhos Islands. A short boat or plane ride away, you will find a large variety of coral
reef formations and ship wrecks to dive on.
The Midwest region is also a great
fishing destination, as the local Western Rock Lobster or Crayfish industry will attest to.
Wether you are looking for big game fishing or quiet angling, the warm waters of the Leeuwin
current are abundant in many varieties of fish. We even carry a range of tackle and bait in
our on-site store and delicatessen.
